Old Man’s Beard (Clematis vitalba) is a vigorous native climber with outstanding value for wildlife, particularly in hedgerows, woodland edges and wild corners of the garden.

In summer, masses of creamy-white, lightly scented flowers provide an important nectar source for bees, hoverflies and other pollinating insects. Later in the year, the plant produces its distinctive silky seed heads – the “old man’s beard” – which add autumn and winter interest and provide shelter for insects.

Naturally found scrambling through hedges and trees, Clematis vitalba is happiest when allowed to grow freely and naturally. It is ideal for wildlife gardens, large spaces, and informal planting schemes where it can climb through shrubs or along fences without being overly restrained.
